About This Game Walkerman is a Visual Novel about hunting supernatural creatures. Each creature obeys a unique set of rules which must be exploited in order to defeat them, in a fashion similar to the old folk tales about vampires and garlic, or werewolves and silver bullets. Each act of Walkerman centers on a creature and the process of investigating it. Players will study the monster in order to ascertain its weaknesses, gather the necessary items, and then confront it in battle. Combat takes place on an isometric, pseudo-board game in which the player selects actions from a list of options. These battle sequences have multiple solutions, depending on the player's collected items and their knowledge of the monster. You could cut a solid 80% of the massive political diatribes and have a better game.I might still pick up chapter 2 If there's some kind of growth in the main protagonist or at least significantly less of his whinging because I think that there is a very strong setting and elements outside of the main character are handled well. There were many points were I wished this was a more traditional RPG where I could pick how my character felt about things. As it is I would liken the experience to going on an amazing fantasy monster hunt while being stuck with a teenage edge lord whining the whole way.. A game I believe to have the potential to be as epic as Pillars of the Earth, or Witcher Visual Novel Edition, if given the chance. Absolutely worth the purchase.EDIT: I've high expectations for Act 2 to begin with, but it still exceeded my expectations with its high polish and astoundingly culture rich writing. There are a couple of bugs, but it was nothing gamebreaking. I would highly recommend any avid visual novel reader to try this out.. Overall I enjoyed this game, though if it isn't already obvious it heavily draws its inspiration from the popular Witcher series. Even coming a little close to plaigirism in a few parts but it more or less never goes past alternate universe fanfiction levels. As for the gameplay its your standard VN, except for when it comes to the "Battle" part of the game. Using a square tiled map complete with tokens and animations seems a little pointless since you don't actually have any control over where you move your character. Instead, a series of decisions pop up based on context and what clues, inventory or choices gathered prior to the hunt. Essentially it means you're still playing a VN, except now your choices are represented on a tiled map. The game they're going for here means I understand why you can't give the player actual control of a tile based combat system but it feels like they wanted to do something turn based and instead had no time, budget or couldn't make the system work so they just left it in there minus the gameplay.Not a huge fan of the chapter ending song, sorry. The rest of the soundtrack is great though! Sound in general is pretty good, everything is mixed right and edited nicely. At first the art didn't do anything for me but it started to grow on me. I don't love it but I'm fine with it, no complaints. Character designs are good for the most part, though obviously the ladies got more work put into them than the men. Unfortunately our first main story monster isn't particularly rememberable, which is a shame. The writing is okay. Mostly because Jorgen, our protaganist, can be a real ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I don't like ignorance of this type from my MC. Because the story is first person, it sucks to be a character who is blatantly racist and intolerant of anything not "Raider". (his people) Doesn't matter if it makes sense in the setting, I still don't have to like it.The only other point of contention was with the dancer girl and the socio-political workings of the Walkerman-verse. It felt like a combination of a massive expositional info-dump (nobody likes those) and people who took one class in world politics and have declared themselves experts in the field. It also reminded me of a number of conversations Geralt of Rivia has had in both the games, books and comics.Now after all this, I enjoyed my time with Walkerman. I don't know if I'll start another playthrough until the second act comes out. I prefer to finish my VN's one route at a time. That said I very much enjoyed the parts where I went out to collect items or clues, do investigations, all in preparation of the final conflict with the "Weird". These moments are the game's strongest point. The fact that you can't just ask every question, collect every clue and item based on your decisions means what you have to work with at the final conflict can be very different from what you might have collected in other routes. This means that sometimes you have to choose carefully your questions or decisions because you might not be able to exhaust a dialogue tree like other games. Some characters just don't want to answer every question and there's only so many hours in the day. As long as they put most of their efforts towards this aspect of the game I'll keep supporting it.. Interesting story with enough horror and intrigue to keep me clicking but this game only includes Act 1 at the moment which can be completed in a few hours. I'd suggest waiting for all 5 chapters to be released, if it ever does, before purchasing this game though. There are multiple branches that probably make this single chapter worthwhile but you probably won't be able to see the effects of your choices till the next chapters. While I'm anticapting the completion of the game, I fear it might not be finished judging by the gap between releases and how far it's strayed from its Kickstarter release schedule.. An interesting light novel that's much more mature in tone and writing than most you'll find on Steam. I was initially drawn in by the premise; artstyle, and seemingly small fanbase. The story follows young man who wants to follow in his father's footsteps of being, (basically the equivalent of some paranormal night hunter). Walkerman is one wrapped in mystery but shortly after starting you’ll find that the author has created an entire world that has an overwhelming sense of history and potential. And you explore it through the lense of a character who is not well adapted to the world himself, out on a sort of fool's journey. Thematically there’s a lot of mystery and tension, as there’s hints of things like political and religious conflict poking their heads very early within the story’s introduction. I often found myself thinking heavily on what information or items I’d like to take and what I was willing to discard. The narrative is rather strong so there is an overall lack of many choices, but the ones you make do seem to all hold some significance for a grander plot that is essentially promised to unfold in the preceding acts. (So take that with a grain of salt). I’m interested in following Walkerman a bit longer as the groundwork for a good story is all laid out fairly well. I definitely enjoyed my time with it, my curiosity is peaked. I honestly wish there was more of a mixed option in the reviews section for cases like this, as this is sort of how I feel towards my recommendation of this series at the moment. Unfortunately I honestly just can’t give it a strong recommendation for two reasons... Firstly this review is based only on the First Act, I think it’d be unwise to write off for a series based on that. Secondly the writing can be somewhat hard to follow as certain vernacular is created for and used among many characters. There’s also a rather large assortment of made up terms and a few non-colloquial words scattered about to add a sort of texture to the world building. (Making the story sometimes a bit difficult to follow, you can’t really read it half-***edly). TLDR; I definitely enjoyed my time with this series, but can’t give it a strong recommendation based on the “First Act” alone. There’s a lot to love here for fans of fantasy stories with deep lore and a new world to delve into, unfortunately it’s just at a surface level at the moment. It’s also a bit hard to follow due to the writer’s use of differing fictional dialect, and some fictitious terms, however if you can look past that and pay attention well it shouldn’t pose too much of an issue. I’ll change my review overtime if I feel I need to add or make adjustments based on the progression of the story, but overall I’m leaning towards a positive first impression. The closest comparison I can come up with is that it's similar to a Witcher VN. The focus is, rather than on killing monsters, you're supposed to find out how you're supposed to do that, experimenting and inquiring to find the set of rules each creature operates on. It's literally a matter of life or death, and requires you to keep a close eye on the plot and any odd occurences, lest you miss a detail that leads to your horrible, horrible death.Speaking of the story, the setting's great. The game does a very good job of putting you in the shoes of Jorgen, rather than making him a self-insert. He's a rural farm-boy with a set of prejudices and preconceptions that leads to some very interesting internal monologues and reactions to other characters. It's an age of decadence and corruption, and he can't help but see moral failings in everyone he sees; the foreign dancer-girl, who you'd expect your average VN protagonist to lust after, is instead labelled a degenerate. It's lovely.I really enjoyed this game, and I'm looking forward to seeing Act 2.. Walkerman is visual novel that, unlike the majority of visual novels, isn't based off anime tropes, which isn't necessarily a good or bad thing, but one I find a bit refreshing in a genre dominated by anime. Walkerman also sets it itself apart from other visual novels by the fact that it actually has gameplay mechanics in the form of a board game aesthetic for battle sequences. While they have been short so far, the build-up and various different options that players have available more than makes up for the fact.The characters and world building are also nicely done, Jorgan is definitely one of the more fascinating protagonists I've seen, he has the same world view that you would expect an uneducated peasant in the middle ages to have. He's superstitious, sexist, and racist. Which is great! I don't want him to start out as an accepting and egalitarian warrior, instead I'm much more interested in watching him build himself up to that as he becomes influenced by various different people and cultures and slowly becomes more and more enlightened as the game progresses.So yeah, I would definitely recommend Walkerman for those of you interested in visual novels, or just reading in general. By the time of this review only the first act has been released, with the 2nd act's release date closing in soon, and I very much look forward to experiencing the rest.. Creating a game that channeled our nostalgia and allowed us to include our collective experiences of the communist regime in Poland in a humorous way was a dream come true. We believe there still are people who love this particular genre as much as we do – and maybe that there are more who will be hooked on point and clicks after playing the right game, hence the mixture of nostalgia and improvements we presented in Irony Curtain. Since the story is one of the most important elements in classic p'n'c games , so we made sure to have a well-written plot and interesting characters - Irony Curtain is about a goofy pen-pusher who gets tangled up in the spy-standoff between two powers. We wanted Evan to be likeable while also making him Guybrushingly funny – he's an unwilling troublemaker and works really well juxtaposed with all the other characters, such as the ruthless Leader or Anna - who's smart, capable, mysterious... We wanted strong personalities to match the story and then we peppered it all with puzzles. A lot of puzzles. And when we say “a lot” - we mean it. And mini-games too. This is where our HOPA background comes in – we're really good in mini-games. They’re not a classical p’n’c mechanic, but we know they enrich the gameplay, allow to pace it and also are a good excercise for the brain. It’s also a tribute to our legacy – we even have one hidden object scene in Irony Curtain as an easter egg! And believe us when we say - there’s plenty easter eggs for you to enjoy – try to find out if there really are 1951 hidden around Matryoshka. That’s another point where the past intertwines with the present, bringing in jokes for both the fan of The Lord of the Rings and F.E.A.R alike. We strived to create a game both familiar but also somehow innovative – that's why the interface is exactly as you know it from other games. If you’re a p’n’c player, you’ll know your way around from the getgo – the inventory, the icons telling you what kind of an action is available, etc. As both players and creators we know that being frustrated is not fun – the game is supposed to be a challenge (like in the old, golden days) but at the same time we wanted the solutions to be more reasonable than “use chickend and bucket to make a helicopter”. The point is to get the satisfaction of solving a riddle using your brain, not a walkthrough. The puzzles in Irony Curtain can be ambigous, challenging but never absurd (and some of them can even be solved in multiple ways). The only absurdity you’ll encounter is the historical absurds that we really lived through. Yes, bribing people was normal. Yes, TP was a precious commodity and we stood in unending queues. But we hope that thanks to this you’ll not only get some mind excercise but also will learn about the oddities we had to live through back in the day.
